AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT – by Peter Yeo

Sometime in the middle of 2010 I saw an article in a British photographic magazine that caught my attention and made me want to try the idea put forward for myself. The cause of this desire to try out what, for me, was quite new was the revelation that it was now possible to buy a 10-Stop Neutral Density (ND) Filter. I ordered one made by the German company B&W; it was quite expensive to get the 77mm filter size I needed for my 24 to 70mm lens. Many landscape photographers use Graduated ND filters, in either “soft” or “hard” form, in 1 or 3-stop versions, to control contrast in their pictures. The range of brightness in a landscape scene can often exceed the ability of a CCD, CMOS or film to record detail in all parts of the scene. By carefully positioning a “grad” of a suitable strength one can record detail in a bright sky whilst, at the same time, providing correct exposure for foreground and middle-distance parts of the scene. However, the article that caught my attention concerned a different type of Neutral Density Filter.
We are all familiar with circular filters that screw into the filter ring at the front of a lens. Many of us “fit and forget” a UV or Skylight filter to act as a protector for the front element of each of our lenses. I do this myself as it is quick and easy to do, is relatively inexpensive and is a good idea. Far better to clean a UV filter than the delicate front element of an expensive multi-coated lens.
The use of a 10-Stop ND filter necessitates the removal of the UV/Skylight filter and its replacement by the dense/opaque ND filter. At 10-Stops density one cannot see through it with the naked eye, though I have found that my Nikon DSLR can meter through it. In order to take a photograph through so dense a filter it is necessary to use a sturdy tripod as exposures can run from several seconds to several minutes, or even exceed an hour, depending on the time of day, light-levels, the aperture and ISO-setting selected. For example, on a dull winter day my hand-held exposure meter suggested an exposure of 1/30th second at f22 and 200 ISO. When adjusted by ten stops this gives 32 seconds at f22. Why f22? For a landscape photograph it is often desirable to maximize Depth of Field (DOF), and f22 provides it. You can choose any aperture you want, of course. Why 200 ISO? This is the lowest ISO I can set on my camera, and a low ISO maximizes image quality.
Having mentioned that a 10-Stop ND Filter is opaque it will be obvious to all that a picture has to be framed-up BEFORE the ND filter is attached, hence the need for a sturdy tripod and, preferably, a cable-release for the shutter, either mechanically or electrically activated. It is recommended that “auto-focus” is switched Off and that the lens is focussed manually. Remember, also, to switch Off your lens Image Stabilization (IS) or Vibration Reduction (VR) facility as their use can degrade image quality when a camera is tripod-mounted. OK, so you have chosen a scene to photograph, your camera is attached to the tripod, you have framed the scene and set exposure, adjusted for the 10-Stop ND filter, and fitted the filter to your lens. Using a cable-release fire the shutter and listen for the sound of the shutter closing at the end of the lengthy exposure. Review the picture on the LCD on the back of your DSLR and you will find that what you thought were almost motionless clouds have created streaks of various tones across the sky. Trees and shrubs will show movement in their branches, and any water will have a smooth even-toned surface. In waterfalls the water will record as a milky torrent as it drops and splashes over rocks beneath.
After downloading your shots you can “enhance” them in Photoshop or other software. After making the usual adjustments in the RAW-converter (you ARE shooting RAW aren’t you?) I have found that NikEfex “Colour Pro-3″ and NikEfex “Silver” allow me to make the sort of changes that appeal to me. For example I may use “Darken Edges/Lighten Centre” to create a Vignette effect, or “Tonal Contrast” to adjust highlights, mid-tones or shadows, to go some way towards an HDR effect without having to make multiple exposures. You may find, as I did, that shots made through a 10-Stop ND filter exhibit a fairly strong warm tone. I am not sure if this is due to the dyes in the filter or is a result of extended exposure times. The colour-cast can, of course, be corrected in Photoshop. You can keep your pictures as colour photographs, in print form or as Digitally Projected Images, or can turn them into monochrome pictures; an example of each accompanies this article.
It is unlikely that you will want to use a 10-Stop ND filter for all your photography but, when you do use one, you can be certain of a different and eye-catching image, and that may make the difference between “doing well” and winning a competition.
The images attached show two different situations where the strong ND Filter makes a real difference to the final picture. In “Bears Paw Reversed”, so called because I have reversed the image for a more pleasing direction of flow to the water, the exposure was 6-seconds. For “Rock Tumble” I gave only 2-seconds. The two images featuring a nearby power station were shot at 30-seconds @ f22 and 200ISO. In all four cases the camera was mounted on my Gitzo carbon Fibre tripod.
