Happy New Year to all Lincoln CC members from us over here in Newark, England. As I write this message Britain is being pounded by gale force winds, speeds over 100mph in many places, with roofs ripped off apartment blocks, trees blown over and some truck and bus drivers killed by falling trees. Flights have been delayed at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports because of the conditions, so all-in-all you may well be better off in Nebraska……. let’s hope so.
The last “proper” meeting we had in Newark was on 12th December when we hosted the Manor Trophy inter-club competition, won once again by RBCC. Our Christmas social event was great success, with good attendance in a superb venue, with equally good food, overlooking the River Trent and a flood-lit Newark Castle. Since then we have had Christmas and New Years Eve, accompanied, no doubt, by the disappearance of copious amounts of drink and rich food, and the expansion of waist measurements to match.
On Saturday 7th January many of our members will attend the official opening of N&EMPF Annual exhibition, firstly because it’s a very good exhibition but, secondly, because members have so many Awards to collect ……. a bumper year as far as Newark is concerned. Dave Lavash won the “Best Colour Print” award, Michael Hughes gained a Selectors Award, Peter Sharman was “Highly Commended” in the Natural History Prints, Gordon Savill was also “Highly Commended” in Monochrome Projected Images. In the Colour Projected Images section Steffan Nicholson got a Selectors Award and Gordon Savill gained a “Certificate of Merit”. Our total number of Acceptances, 36, put Newark in joint Second Place, behind Rolls-Royce(Derby)PS who managed a wonderful 59 Acceptances.
Our members will see the N&EMPF Annual Exhibition CD on Monday 9th January and will be able show their appreciation of our Award winners that evening.
Monday 16th January will be the 5th Heat of Photographer of the Year, to be judged by Steve Myall from Keyworth CC near Nottingham. Steve is a renowned “people photographer” and a very successful exhibitor.
On the 23rd we will learn something about “The Sherpas and Snowmen – a return to Everest” when Tim Hudson returns to show pictures from his trip to Nepal in 2003; we are promised “a look at the country, the people and the Abominable Snowman (Yeti)” in Tim’s digital images presentation.
The 30th January is scheduled to be a talk on travels in the Amazon by Anthony Fell from Bolsover but as he is traveling in India for two or three months at this moment I doubt that we shall see him or his talk. I am sure our Programme Secretary has someone to take his place.
Two pals and I went to the Lincolnshire coast on 29th December, to visit “Fantasy Island” amusements park. It was closed for the winter but the gates were open so we were able to get in and take pictures. There can be few sadder places than an amusement park out of season, but on a bright and sunny morning we were able to get some interesting pictures. Towards the end of the morning we heard the sound of motor-cycle engines and were drawn towards the beach where we found dozens of sand-racing bikes and quad-bikes roaring around throwing up sand as they sped about and leaped over man-made mounds and gullies in the beach. They all had great fun and we got some quite pleasing shots there too.
