Lincoln Fire Department Water Rescue hosts a Surface Ice Rescue Training class on January 8, at Holmes Lake Park. Surrounding area Fire Departments were trained in procedures and methods of rescuing a person in ice covered water. Protective suits enabled the firemen to with stand the frigid frozen waters. Prior to the training class, several holes were cut through the 8-10 inch ice. Rescuers were taught the proper procedures for approaching the trapped person, how best to enter the open water to help the victim out, and the best ways to get both of them out safely.
A team of other rescuers were on shore holding the lifeline rope and were available for support or further action needed.
